The Endless Warrior Friday Fictioneer March 1, 2013

I wanted to bow out of this picture this week. The alternative was to go back to working on my dress that has been kicking my ass ALL WEEK . I won't go into much detail except for the fact that I've had to take it apart twice so far and I went through one spool of thread already.  I decided to do a little creative writing instead. Much more therapeutic than sewing.
If I can finish this I can do anything.
(Especially therapeutic if you're not that good at it. I took up sewing when I my writer's block didn't go away.)

This week's photo prompt made me think of time travel. I think it's the photos in the side compartment that do it. It also had me looking for uncommon names and going over the word count. Say hello to Ajax the warrior and Nitya the timeless.

The Endless Warrior, 122 words:

Nitya heard the keys but refused to hope. Every day Ajax entered the garage, keys jangling and took the car. She knew that the car was the appropriate choice, it did not stop the hurt she felt whenever the garage door closed behind them. A glimpse of the world outside, fresh air, sky and road stretched endlessly, while she rotted inside.

The garage doors made the slow crawl upward. The car’s engine started. He parked it just outside the doors overhead. Dare she hope?

Ajax sat in the worn seat, disturbing the dust in the compartment.

“When and where to?” Nitya said hoping to not sound too eager.

“Anywhere but here.” He caressed the dashboard as she hummed to life and they disappeared.

  1. Well... your sewing block got you back writing. That pattern book looks out of Mad Men... it will be great when you get it finished... I like the color.

Cute story... I hope I'm reading it correctly. Nitya the timeless is a classic old car no longer used?

    1. Nitya is a time machine, that has a personality. She's got a little car envy.

  2. She got out!!! But where did they go? I liked the names. As for sewing, I think it's therapeutic only if you're good at it. I had sewing guilt for years since my mom sewed. I finally realized I wasn't spending too much money for clothes and that sewing had gotten a lot more expensive! So I jettisoned the sewing guilt. Your dress looks stunning.

    1. Yes she did. The better question is when are they going. Ajax just told her to go and I'm hoping they end up somep, ace really nice be it the future or the past.

I agree that sewing gets a little expensive. But if you're lucky to have a swap meet or flea market near you, you can get really cool fabric cheap. Sometimes even cheaper than the pattern itself.

  3. You got an A plus on originality. I'm sure old cars appreciate any little attention.. Nice job.

    1. I feel like I have to revamp the story to say that Nitya isn't a car. Please stand by for revisions.

  4. I got the idea that Nitya (probably) isn't a car; that she's a time machine. Now I want to know what she looks like. I'll guess I'll have to fill that in myself. I love the personality you gave her.

    1. I started working on a longer version of this for a possible short story. I'm not really sure what she looks like yet. I do know that Ajax was not the first to travel with her. I think she likes him best though.

  7. good for her to say, "anywhere but here. that takes guts." well done.

in this line - Everyday Ajax entered the garage. here, "every day" should be two words. if you can replace it with "each day" like "each day i wake up early," then it's two words. when you can replace it with "common," then it's one word. like "brushing my teeth is an everyday event." brushing my teeth is a common event.

    1. Well Ajax trust Nitya to take him some place that's nothing like what he deals with on a regular basis. Nitya wants to get out too so where she takes them it has to be satisfying to both of them.

For the life of me I had no idea what you were saying. I had to look that up to understand. And I stand corrected. See this is why I do this exercise. Thank you so much.

  8. Dear Atiya,
I want one of those. Not sure what time I'd want but sometime with less stress. Does Nitya do over the rainbow? Wait there are witches there. Never mind.
Imaginative take on the prompt. Nice job.

    1. I might post a little bit more. I f the photo prompt allows it I think I might try to being them back like Toddy and Errol once in a while. Now that I think if it, I haven't seen those two guys since the spider web picture. Hang on a sec....

    1. Nitya is a time machine with a personality that wants to travel with Ajax. She sits in a garage while Ajax takes the car places and she pretty much rots away.

  15. Does the car go with them? If so, no matter what time period they end up in, Nitya and the buggy will certainly command attention. Looking forward to the future adventures of the time-hopping protagonists.
