Friday Fictioneers: Hide Out

This week's Photo Prompt comes from Amanda Gray. Very Nice! What's funny is that I totally procrastinated on this picture. I had an idea for something more ominous and sinister. It was gearing up to be something scary. Then after I wasted the entire morning doing nothing.

I realized that I need to actually put it down. And when I did, something else came out completely.

Hide Out

“We’re the only building out here for miles of course they’ll find us."
“They don’t know this place like we do. They don’t know about the caves."
“Yeah great, if we could get to the caves from this place. We’re wide open, you ass."
Turner grabbed Wilson by the ear. Outside the desolate shelter, Turner kicked over a wood pile revealing a dark tunnel dug deep in the ground. He glared at Wilson until the other man blinked
“Cave.” Wilson said.
“Cave. I dug it two years ago. When these things arrived.”
“That’s back when...”
“When they killed my wife.”

  2. If this isn't ominous, sinister, and scary, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to read one of your pieces that DOES meet that standard! You do a great job of drawing us into the situation and building tension while we start to understand what's going on (at first I thought they had probably escaped from jail!)

    1. The other story, the one that's still kicking around in my head, was about a woman being held by a gang of outlaws. Something about someone walking over floor boards really slow...

I wish I could finish that one. It won't come out for some reason. Thank you for reading and for the vote of confidence.

  4. Ah, suspenseful! I want to know what's down in that cave, and the back story for what's happened in the last two years (clearly nothing good). Nice job!

    1. Maybe an alien invasion, maybe zombies, maybe a new species of cyclical insects, maybe mutated humans, you never really know with things. SomeTHING to think about. Thanks for dropping by.

    1. Thank you. I think Turner is more of a survivalist. Though he does have to potential for an uprising. Something to expand on maybe...

  8. I'm hooked. Makes me want to know what "these things" are, and how the things got there. Great story!

    1. Thank you for stopping by and commenting. If I could get the current book I'm reading out of my head for a sec I could say what these things are. HHHmmmm how they got there. Now that is a very good question.

    1. Who said anything about them coming from the sky? They could be from another plane. I like how there's a question of where these things comes from. Thanks for commenting.

    1. Gee thank you for the compliment! I know what you mean Lora, I'd jump in the tunnel too. My imagination is just brimming with all kinds of horrible cruelties those things exacted on Turner's dead wife. Scariness. Thanks for sharing your story and then visiting mine.

    2. Like a zombie, lol, but surprisingly enough my back is fine :) Thanks for asking. I rented a car and went cheap. Next time, I'll spring a little extra for the Chrysler 300 instead and then I *know* I'll be comfortable!

  13. Hi Atiya,
I'm late late late this week. Love this one, but I don't really see how it's not a cliff hanging nail biter, it sure was for me! Will they get away? Not unless they stop the arguing they obviously enjoy and get in that cave!
    cheers,
    Lorelei
